A reverse roguelike about the struggle of gambling addiction. Every spin of the slot machine grants an immediate advantage but permanently weakens the player, making survival increasingly difficult. The only way to escape is to resist temptation.
I designed the combat and gameplay mechanics, the progression system, and three symbolic boss fights representing self-judgment, abstinence, and addiction itself.
In terms of combat design, this game was a major challenge. We deliberately avoided using traditional FPS mechanics or conventional combat systems, as our goal was for players to overcome symbolic boss fights through a metaphorical combat approach. Each boss featured a unique player combat system designed to reflect a different stage in the struggle against gambling addiction.
This approach allowed us to experiment with "combat" mechanics that conveyed emotion and narrative through gameplay, rather than raw action.
We developed Spiral in Unity (3D) as an experimental take on roguelike mechanics with a psychological theme. We made it in just two weeks for a game jam and won an award.
